A court on Wednesday rejected the bail plea of Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam in a case filed over allegations that he abetted his second wife, Mariam Khatun, to commit suicide.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order after hearing the bail petition.

Gazi Nazrul was sent to jail on September 28 after the end of his second round of remand in the case.

Earlier, on September 24, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain placed him on a fresh four-day remand. He had earlier been remanded for four days, while his first wife, Maksuda Islam, was placed on one-day remand on September 21. Another accused, Obaidur Rahman, was sent to jail on September 23.

Police recovered Mariam’s body hanging from a ceiling fan inside Flat No. 203 on the third floor of Building No. 5 of NAM Bhaban on the evening of September 20. Gazi Nazrul and Maksuda were taken into custody following the incident.

Mariam’s father, SM Masum Billah, filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station that morning against Gazi Nazrul, Maksuda and Mariam’s maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman, accusing them of abetting her suicide.

According to the case documents, Mariam, 19, married Gazi Nazrul in June 2026, allegedly under the “direct instigation” of Obaidur Rahman. She had been living with Nazrul and Maksuda at Flat No. 203 of Building No. 5 of NAM Bhaban, opposite the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

The case documents also state that Mariam had told her family that Nazrul and Maksuda had been physically and mentally torturing her over various issues since the marriage.
