A case has been filed against 20–25 unidentified people over an alleged attack on National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary at Lalon Akhra in Kushtia.

Jannatul Ferdous Tony, convener of the NCP’s Kushtia district unit, filed the case with Kumarkhali Police Station on Wednesday, Officer-in-Charge Jamal Uddin confirmed on Friday afternoon.

According to the complaint, Nasiruddin visited Chheuriya Akhrabari in Kumarkhali upazila on 4 October and listened to Lalon songs.

At around 8:15pm, as he and his associates were leaving through the main gate, a group of unidentified people attacked them, the complaint alleged.

It said one of the attackers threw an egg and a stone at the NCP leader before shouting at him. The attackers then allegedly ambushed Nasiruddin and the party members accompanying him with sticks, bamboo poles, pipes, wooden battens, iron rods, stones and other locally available weapons, injuring several people.

The group took shelter inside the shrine to escape the attack, but the assailants followed them and continued the assault, according to the complaint.

The attackers also allegedly vandalised Nasiruddin’s vehicle and attempted to prevent him from leaving the premises safely.

When local residents, NCP members and others intervened to protect the group, the attackers withdrew from the shrine and gathered near the main gate, where they continued to threaten and intimidate the NCP leader and his associates, the complaint stated.

Nasiruddin and the other activists later left the Akhrabari safely with police assistance and in the presence of journalists.

OC Jamal said no one had been arrested in connection with the incident so far.

Police were working to identify and apprehend those involved, he added.
