European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner has praised the extraordinary resilience of the people of Bangladesh in the face of immense suffering over the past two decades, following his visit to the July Mass Uprising Memorial Museum.

“What the people of Bangladesh had to suffer is unbelievable. The European Union will stand beside Bangladesh and support efforts to reinstate public trust in the authorities,” Brunner said after visiting the museum on Monday.

An EU delegation, accompanied by EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller, visited the museum to learn about the country’s recent history, including the repression and persecution under the Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina.

The delegation began its visit at a memorial on the museum grounds dedicated to those killed under the authoritarian regime. Brunner viewed a letter written by Anas, who was killed in police firing on August 5, and took note of the pivotal role played by women on the front lines of the July uprising.

Inside the museum, the delegation examined exhibits documenting 16 years of authoritarian rule and the repression faced by the BNP and other political parties during the Awami League’s tenure.

Following the tour, Ehasan Mahamud, director general of the July Mass Uprising Memorial Museum, met with the EU delegation.

Brunner thanked the museum authorities for providing an insight into Bangladesh’s recent history, highlighting the suffering endured by its people and their resilience in confronting it.
