Police detained a 50-year-old man for killing and eating a live myna bird to win a 500 taka bet in Madarganj upazila of Jamalpur.

The man, identified as Md Sadullah, was detained from his home in the Maddhapara area of Koalikandi around noon on Wednesday, a day after the incident. A video showing the act went viral on social media, triggering widespread outrage.

Madarganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Snehasish Roy told Daily Waadaa that police detained Sadullah following an operation after the video spread online.

He said legal proceedings were underway and that a mobile court of the Forest Department’s Wildlife and Nature Conservation Circle would take legal action against those involved.

According to police and local sources, Sadullah placed a 500 taka bet with another person at Koalikandi Bazar in Charpakerdah Union on Tuesday.

To win the wager, he caught a myna, tore the bird apart while it was still alive and ate its raw flesh, the sources said.

A person present at the scene recorded the incident, and the footage later circulated on social media, prompting police action.

The video shows Sadullah sitting on the ground as he tears apart the live bird and eats its flesh, while several people watch nearby.
