The body of a Bangladeshi man allegedly shot dead by an Indian Khasi man inside India near the Kanaighat border in Sylhet was recovered 26 hours after the incident, with assistance from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), on Friday.

Khaled Ahmed, 23, son of the late Fazlu Mia of Eraligul village, was shot around noon on Thursday in the Akua border area, about 1.5km inside Indian territory. His body was brought back to Bangladesh around 2pm on Friday.

According to local sources, Khaled crossed into India on Thursday with a group of 10 people through the Mikirpara area near main border pillar No. 1333 in Dona, under Lakshmiprasad East Union of Kanaighat upazila.

They were allegedly fired upon by an Indian Khasi man. Khaled was hit and fell to the ground, while the others fled back across the border. Several members of the group were reportedly injured.

Local union parishad member Nazim Uddin said Khaled died at the scene. After being informed, the BGB contacted India's Border Security Force (BSF), but the latter later denied responsibility, he said.

Local Bangladeshi residents subsequently went to the Indian border area and brought back the body with assistance from the BGB, Nazim added.

Kanaighat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Aminul Islam said police had received the information and were sending a team to the scene. Legal procedures would follow, he said.

Personnel at the Dona BGB camp declined to comment immediately, saying they would provide information later.

Earlier, on 10 October, the bullet-riddled body of another young man, Shahin Ahmed, was found inside Bangladesh near the Sonarkheor border in Kanaighat upazila.
