Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday ordered action against a doctor at Bangladesh Shishu Hospital and Institute in Agargaon after finding him smoking in his room during a surprise visit.

Following the prime minister’s directive, Rafiqul Islam was suspended, said his Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplu.

The prime minister expressed strong displeasure after finding the room of Associate Professor Rafiqul Islam in an unhygienic condition while the doctor was smoking inside it, he said.

During the visit around noon, the prime minister inspected different departments of the hospital and looked into the working environment for doctors and health workers as well as the overall cleanliness of the facility.

Upon finding the doctor smoking in his room, the prime minister instructed the chairman of the hospital’s management board, Professor Dr AKM Azizul Haque, to take action against him.

During the visit, Tarique also stressed the need to maintain a hygienic environment, ensure cleanliness and make doctors and other staff members more responsible in carrying out their duties.

Tarique visited Bangladesh Shishu Hospital and Institute as part of his surprise visits to hospitals and educational institutions in the capital to assess the dengue situation and cleanliness activities.
