Two Supreme Court lawyers have sought an unconditional apology before the International Crimes Tribunal-2 over comments they made on the death sentences handed down to seven people, including Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader and six others for crimes against humanity during the July Uprising.
The lawyers, M Hasanuzzaman Tushar and Mohammad Hasan Chowdhury, appeared before the tribunal on Monday morning (October 26) and sought the apology in response to contempt of court allegations.
The tribunal has set January 25 for passing an order in the matter.
Senior lawyer Mansurul Haque Chowdhury was to represent the two lawyers at the hearing, while Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam appeared for the prosecution.
Later, Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam said the lawyers had expressed remorse and sought an unconditional apology.
On September 16, after hearing the prosecution's contempt of court allegations against the two lawyers, the tribunal directed them to appear on September 23 and explain their comments. After they appeared on that date, the tribunal scheduled the next hearing for October 26.
Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim said the two Supreme Court lawyers had posted statements about the verdict, which the prosecution brought to the tribunal's attention.
According to the prosecutor, one of the lawyers wrote, “I strongly condemn and hatefully reject the illegal, false, fabricated and baseless verdict of the illegal kangaroo court. Everything will be settled on the streets.”
Commenting on that post, the other lawyer wrote, “I strongly condemn and protest against the illegal verdict of the kangaroo court. I reject this dictated verdict.”
Earlier, on September 15, International Crimes Tribunal-2, headed by Chairman Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, sentenced seven people to death for crimes against humanity during the uprising.
Besides Obaidul Quader, the other convicted persons are activities-banned Awami League's Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, former state minister for information and broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat, Jubo League President Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash and General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, and banned Chhatra League's President Saddam Hossain and General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Inan.
