BNP-nominated candidate Eliza Zaman is set to be elected unopposed to reserved women’s seat No. 23 in the 13th parliament, as the Election Commission has declared her the only validly nominated candidate.

Eliza was the sole aspirant to submit a nomination paper before the deadline expired on Monday afternoon. The Election Commission published the list of validly nominated candidates on Wednesday after scrutinising her nomination paper on Tuesday.

The list was issued through a notification signed by Md Moin Uddin Khan, the returning officer for reserved seats and an EC joint secretary.

Eliza is a joint convener of Pirojpur district BNP and the organising secretary for the Barishal division of the party’s women’s wing, Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal.

According to the EC schedule, November 1 is the last date for withdrawal of candidature. Although voting is scheduled for November 12, no ballot will be needed if Eliza remains in the race. She is expected to be declared elected unopposed after the withdrawal deadline.

Earlier, on October 1, BNP reserved-seat lawmaker Ferdousy Ahmed Mishti resigned after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman instructed her to step down. The Parliament Secretariat issued a gazette notification declaring the seat vacant the same day.

Her resignation came amid allegations that she was involved in an attack, vandalism, looting and demolition at the Radda MCH-FP Centre, a maternal and child healthcare facility in Mirpur. The facility was attacked and vandalised around midnight, with allegations implicating ruling party leaders and activists at different levels.

Mishti, however, denied any involvement in the incident.
