Garment workers in Mirpur took to the streets again on Sunday morning, demanding a minimum monthly wage of 30,000 taka and blocking roads around the Mirpur-10 roundabout, causing severe traffic congestion.
Workers from several garment factories gathered at the intersection around 9:00am and blocked the roads, continuing protests that have taken place over the past several days.
The blockade brought traffic through the busy intersection to a standstill, prompting the Mirpur Traffic Division to arrange alternative routes to ease congestion.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Mahfuzul Haque Bakshi of the Mirpur Traffic Division confirmed the development, saying garment workers had blocked the roads again on Sunday, disrupting traffic in the area.
“We are trying to keep traffic moving by arranging diversions,” he said.
The workers also blocked several roads in Mirpur on Thursday and Saturday.
Following Saturday’s blockade, some protesting workers vandalised several garment factories and shopping malls.
