BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Wednesday said strong and constructive bilateral relations between Bangladesh and China could contribute to the prosperity of both countries while promoting regional peace, stability and economic cooperation.
He made the remarks at a roundtable with visiting Liu Haixing, Minister of the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), at a hotel in the capital on Wednesday afternoon.
Rizvi said the BNP's foreign policy was rooted in national interest and guided by a "Bangladesh First" approach.
"Your visit to Bangladesh reflects the long-standing friendship, mutual trust and enduring partnership between our two countries and two political parties," he said.
He added that the BNP government was committed to an independent, balanced and forward-looking foreign policy aimed at maintaining friendly and mutually beneficial relations with all countries.
Referring to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's official visit to China from June 22 to 26 this year, Rizvi said the visit had renewed the two countries' commitment to expanding cooperation in trade, investment, infrastructure, technology and development. He expressed hope that it would pave the way for further collaboration.
Reaffirming the BNP's support for the One-China policy, Rizvi said Bangladesh recognised that there was only one China and that Taiwan was an inseparable part of it.
He said Bangladesh offered significant investment opportunities in manufacturing, energy, information technology, textiles, agro-processing and pharmaceuticals, while calling for greater access for Bangladeshi products to the Chinese market.
Rizvi also welcomed the proposed China Economic and Industrial Zone, which could attract around 30 Chinese companies with an estimated investment of $500 million and generate nearly 100,000 jobs.
On education, he urged the Chinese government to create more opportunities for Bangladeshi students to pursue higher studies in medical science and consider establishing a technology university in Bangladesh to strengthen human resource development.
