‘Hundreds of parliamentarians in UK, only six!’: State minister reacts to UK politicians’ appeal over Hasina

Staff Correspondent

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir has declined to offer a detailed comment on an appeal by six British politicians urging the UK government to seek assurances that former prime minister Sheikh Hasina will not face execution if she returns to Bangladesh.

Asked about the appeal by journalists on Sunday, Kobir responded, “There are hundreds of parliamentarians in the UK, but only six!”

When journalists continued seeking his comment, he said he might speak on the matter on Monday.

Kobir made the remarks while leaving his office at around 5:45pm on Sunday.

He is scheduled to speak to journalists at a curtain-raiser briefing at 10am on Monday ahead of Prime Minister's participation in a climate conference in Turkey.

The six British politicians, including Conservative MP Bob Blackman, have written to British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, calling on the UK government to secure assurances from Bangladesh that Hasina will not be executed if she returns from exile in India.

The letter also seeks independent scrutiny of Hasina's conviction, legal safeguards against torture and political violence, and diplomatic efforts to promote political reconciliation in Bangladesh.

Hasina was sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal for crimes against humanity committed during the July 2024 uprising crackdown. She fled to India following the fall of her government in August 2024.
