DCCI urges NBR to avoid harassing businesses in source tax drive

The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) has welcomed the National Board of Revenue's (NBR) initiative to strengthen the deduction, deposit, monitoring and verification of tax deducted at source, saying its effective implementation would boost revenue collection and help expand the country's tax net.

In a statement issued on Monday, the chamber said proper enforcement of the initiative under the existing tax law would play a positive role in improving overall revenue collection.

However, the DCCI cautioned that businesses already compliant with tax regulations should not face unnecessary harassment during implementation.

It also urged the NBR to ensure fair treatment for businesses that have yet to achieve full compliance by allowing them sufficient time and opportunity to meet the requirements.

The chamber stressed that greater use of automation and digital systems in revenue administration is essential to help the government meet its revenue targets while broadening the tax base. It said such measures would also reduce unnecessary difficulties for the private sector.

The DCCI said it believes enhanced revenue collection and a business-friendly environment can be achieved simultaneously.

It also underscored the need for continued constructive dialogue between the NBR and the business community, alongside joint efforts by the government and private sector to strengthen discipline in tax administration across all sectors.
