Australia captain Pat Cummins has acknowledged Bangladesh’s quality ahead of the second Test in Mackay, describing the side that stunned Australia in Darwin as “a really good cricket team.”
“A lot of people jump to say that, ‘You have to win everything’ – and obviously we hope we do,” Cummins said in the pre-match press conference ahead of the second Test, beginning on Saturday.
“Particularly home Test matches, we pride ourselves on winning as many as we can.
“But we were nowhere near our best. I think Bangladesh played really well. They’re a really good cricket team,” he added.
Bangladesh secured a historic nine-wicket victory in Darwin, their first Test win on Australian soil, and took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Australia now need to win in Mackay to avoid a series defeat.
Cummins said Australia’s defeat was not simply a reflection of conditions, but acknowledged Bangladesh had capitalised on the opportunities presented to them.
The Australian captain also discussed the Mackay pitch and its possible impact on selection, with off-spinner Nathan Lyon initially under consideration for omission in favour of a four-man pace attack.
“Looked like it kind of got better to bat on the longer the game went on, but it’s a couple of years ago,” Cummins said of previous data.
“You take it as data, but it’s not the only factor affecting the selection decision. It’s largely conditions based.”
Australia ultimately retained Lyon for the second Test, with Matthew Renshaw replacing Jake Weatherald as the only change to the XI.
