Bangladesh climb to sixth in ICC Test rankings after drawn series with Australia

Bangladesh have risen to sixth in the ICC Men's Test Team Rankings, their highest position since gaining Test status in 2000, after drawing their two match series in Australia 1-1.

The Tigers moved up three places from ninth, now sitting on 1,878 points from 24 matches with a rating of 78. They have overtaken Sri Lanka, Pakistan and the West Indies in the process, with only England, India, New Zealand, South Africa and table topping Australia above them.

Sri Lanka sit closest behind in seventh with 76 rating points, followed by Pakistan on 75 and the West Indies on 74. Australia remain well clear at the summit with a rating of 126, ahead of South Africa on 119.

The rise came despite Bangladesh returning home without the series trophy, having suffered an innings and 51 run defeat in Mackay after Mitchell Starc claimed 10 wickets across the match to level the series at 1-1.

Shoriful Islam had briefly kept Bangladesh in contention in that second Test, taking seven wickets in Australia's innings, the best figures by a Bangladesh bowler overseas in Test cricket, though it was ultimately not enough to prevent defeat.

It was the historic win in the opening Test at Darwin that ultimately proved decisive for the rankings boost. Bangladesh beat Australia by nine wickets, their first Test victory on Australian soil and only their second ever win over the hosts in the format.

Hasan Mahmud was central to that success, finishing with nine wickets in the match including six in Australia's first innings.

Tanzid Hasan Tamim's century and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto's 84 laid the foundations with the bat, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz contributed with both bat and ball.

Bangladesh's tour of Australia ultimately delivered a mixed outcome, ending without the series trophy but bringing a first ever Test win on Australian soil, a drawn series against the world's top ranked side, and their best ever position in the Test rankings.
