England have reclaimed the number one spot in the T20I rankings, overtaking India despite the Shreyas Iyer led side completing a 3-0 series win over Afghanistan.
The change came after England secured their own clean sweep, beating Sri Lanka 3-0 in the three match series, with the decisive win arriving via an eight wicket victory in the final fixture on Saturday.
Both sides sit level on 269 rating points, though England edge ahead on average rating, having accumulated 11,021 total points from just 41 matches compared to India's 17,201 points across 64 matches.
This marks England's second stint at the top of the rankings this year, having first reached number one in July following a 4-0 series win over India. India reclaimed the summit shortly afterwards during a subsequent series against Zimbabwe.
Captain Harry Brook has overseen a remarkable run of form since taking charge of England's white ball side, winning 23 of his 26 matches in charge, with Sunday's result also extending England's winning streak against Sri Lanka specifically to 15 consecutive T20Is.
Brook attributed the team's consistency to their ability to adapt regardless of conditions, rather than relying on any single approach. "It all comes down to adapting to conditions, really. We want to be a side where when the conditions aren't in our favour, we're still able to manufacture a win," he said.
He also praised the contribution of squad members who had featured less regularly throughout the series. "Everybody stepped up in this series, especially lads who haven't played as much. Sonny Baker, for example, bowling three overs in the powerplay in two games is an amazing achievement," Brook said.
He continued by highlighting the wider squad's role in the series victory. "Not to mention the amount of runs that a lot of people do in the powerplay as well, taking wickets. Liam Dawson again, awesome performer, Jos Buttler again. I could go through that whole team, but yeah, we're adapting to conditions really well," he added.
Brook was named player of the series for his efforts, having also struck a century in the opening match, and finished the campaign having led from the front throughout.
India's position looks markedly different from where it stood earlier this year. Shreyas Iyer's first assignments as captain proved difficult, with India losing 2-0 to Ireland before suffering a heavier 4-0 defeat in a five match series against England.
Since then, India have steadied themselves with series wins over Zimbabwe and Afghanistan, though neither side represented particularly stern opposition, with attention now turning towards India's title defence at the upcoming Asian Games.
Elsewhere in the rankings, Australia and New Zealand occupy third and fourth place respectively behind the top two, while Bangladesh sit eighth overall with 224 rating points.
