Three wickets in a flash drag Afghanistan back into Abu Dhabi Test

Sports Desk

Afghanistan turned the opening day of the one-off Test on its head, claiming three wickets for just four runs in the second session as Bangladesh slid from 221 for two to 225 for five at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Friday.

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto was the last to go, dismissed for 29 when a Qais Ahmad leg break drew a false stroke. Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz were left to steady matters at 226 for five after 52 overs.

Mushfiqur Rahim’s duck was the middle blow. Bangladesh’s most successful Test batter looked uncomfortable and had no answer to Yamin Ahmadzai’s inswinging yorker, bowled for nought off seven balls before his bat came down. Bangladesh were 224 for four after 50 overs.

Bangladesh collapsed at the end of the session, losing three wickets for just four runs after being comfortably placed at 221 for two.

Mominul Haque was the first of the three to fall, caught at cover by Rahmat Shah for 39 off 70 balls when he stepped forward to drive Yamin Ahmadzai and failed to middle it. His 37-run stand with Shanto, lasting 59 balls, ended at 221 for three.

The first sign of trouble had come earlier, when Shadman Islam fell for 67 off 111 balls, pulling a short Mohammad Salim delivery to square leg, where Zia Ur Rahman took a superb diving catch. It ended a 60-run stand off 90 balls.

That fifty, his ninth in Test cricket, had arrived off 94 balls at the start of the session with a boundary off Mohammad Salim, after he survived a drop on five when Hashmatullah Shahidi spilled a straightforward chance at cover.

Bangladesh lost four wickets for 94 runs in the session, a sharp turnaround after their 134 for one first session, which they had dominated thanks to Tanzid’s 83 off 71 balls. Yamin Ahmadzai took two for 47 from 12 overs, while he and Mohammad Salim troubled the batters with short balls before getting the ball to reverse.
