Bangladesh women's cricket team were beaten by seven wickets in the first ODI against Australia at Allan Border Field in Brisbane on Friday, the hosts chasing down 167 in just 25.4 overs and finishing with 146 balls to spare in a one-sided contest.
Bangladesh were playing an ODI series in Australia for the first time, but never found their footing after Australia won the toss and chose to bowl, Farzana Haque falling to the first ball of the innings and Sharmin Sultana following for four.
Sharmin Akhter made 24 off 26 balls and captain Nigar Sultana added 29 off 86, forming a third-wicket stand that offered brief relief, but wickets kept falling at regular intervals and the scoring never gathered real momentum through the middle overs.
Ritu Moni top-scored with 45 off 63 balls, including five fours, to carry Bangladesh past 150, while Shorna Akter made 21 off 50 and Nahida Akter finished unbeaten on 19 as Bangladesh were bowled out for 166 in 49.4 overs.
Annabel Sutherland was the pick of Australia’s bowlers with four wickets for 30 runs in 9.4 overs, Megan Schutt returned two for 19 from ten tidy overs, and Ashleigh Gardner and Tahlia McGrath took one wicket each to finish the job.
Australia started aggressively and were never troubled. Georgia Voll fell for 19 off 18 balls, but Phoebe Litchfield took the chase away from Bangladesh with 77 off 57 balls, hitting ten fours and a six before Rabeya Khan finally dismissed her.
Ellyse Perry, unbeaten on 26 off 45 balls, and Annabel Sutherland, who added 25 not out off 23 to go with her four wickets, saw Australia home after Litchfield’s exit, while Habiba Islam took two wickets and Rabeya Khan one for Bangladesh.
Australia lead the three-match series 1-0, and the second ODI takes place in Brisbane on October 11, giving the Tigresses just two days to regroup and avoid falling 2-0 behind, having been comprehensively outplayed in both batting and bowling in Friday’s opener.
