Bangladeshi origin cricketer Robin Das faces two rape charges, Essex confirm he is no longer employed

Sports Desk

Essex have confirmed that batter Robin Das, a 24 year old cricketer of Bangladeshi origin, is no longer employed by the county, after he appeared at Inner London Crown Court on Friday, charged with two counts of rape.

The Metropolitan Police say the charges relate to an allegation that a woman was raped twice in Brixton, south London, in March 2024. Das was arrested in August 2025 and charged in July this year. He has not been convicted of any offence.

He was released on conditional bail at the end of the hearing, where Judge Freya Newbury fixed a five day trial for January 2028.

Under the terms reported by ESPNcricinfo, he will remain on conditional bail until the trial concludes.

In a statement, Essex said the club “recognises the seriousness of the matter” and will make no further comment on the circumstances of the case, which it has previously said took place outside club activities.

The county stressed that Das’s playing contract ended before the 2026 season finished, following his suspension and his unavailability to play, and that this decision was separate from the legal proceedings.

Essex added that it has robust safeguarding and disciplinary procedures, and will keep working closely with the England and Wales Cricket Board, the Professional Cricketers’ Association and the Cricket Regulator.

Born in London to a Bangladeshi father from Sunamganj, Das debuted for Essex in 2020 aged 18 and made 60 appearances for the county. He also played two matches for Dhaka Dominators in the 2022-23 Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

His only first-team outing this season was a Metro Bank One-Day Cup match against Middlesex on July 21, when he scored 29.
