South Africa captain Temba Bavuma struck an unbeaten 125 to steer his side to 318-7 at Tea on Day 3 of the second test against Australia at St George’s Park on Tuesday.
Bavuma’s fifth test century came off 226balls in a patient innings. He was joined by Simon Harmer, unbeaten on 30, as the tail frustrated Australia’s attack after the second session.
South Africa resumed on 97-5, in a precarious position after rain restricted the opening two days to just 43 overs.
Bavuma and Marco Jansen then added 132 for the seventh wicket, breaking South Africa’s previous record of 89 for that wicket at St George’s Park, set against England in 1896.
Jansen made a quick 85 off 100 balls, punishing the bowling, before falling to Scott Boland in the first over with the second new ball.
Boland finished with 5-63, his third five-wicket haul in tests and first outside Australia.
Wiaan Mulder (13) fell in the morning session, ducking into a short ball from Mitchell Starc and gloving it to Matt Renshaw at slip. Mulder was given out only after a review. It was Starc’s 450th test wicket.
Australia lead the three-match series 1-0 after winning last week’s opening test in Durban by 214 runs.
One flag for the desk: the notes give St George’s Park but no city, so I used Gqeberha as the dateline. Please confirm before filing. Also fix “226balls” to “226 balls” in the third paragraph.
