Jansen five-for bowls Australia out for 99, South Africa enforce follow-on

Marco Jansen claimed 5-33 as South Africa dismissed Australia for 99 on the fourth day of the second Test, forcing them to follow on for only the second time since 1988.

It was Jansen’s second five-wicket haul in his last three Tests. Australia trailed South Africa’s first-innings 425 by 326 runs.

Australia were bowled out for under 100 for the first time in 69 innings, since India dismissed them for 91 in Nagpur in 2023. It was their fourth-lowest total against South Africa.

Steven Smith top-scored with 28 and became the 12th batter to reach 11,000 Test runs. Only Ricky Ponting and Allan Border have done so among Australians.

Nightwatcher Scott Boland fell to Jansen’s first ball of the morning, edging to wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton. Travis Head followed after a review showed his lbw dismissal was hitting the top of middle stump.

Australia were 22-3 within half an hour. Marnus Labuschagne then edged Anrich Nortje to Simon Harmer, who took a stunning one-handed catch at gully.

Labuschagne has now gone 44 innings without a century and averages 25.72 since December 2023.

South Africa suffered a setback when Nortje left the field mid-over with a suspected groin injury. He was ruled out for the rest of the innings and is unlikely to bowl again in the match.

Wiaan Mulder and Harmer filled the gap. Aiden Markram’s off-spin is also an option as South Africa rotate their remaining seamers.

Smith survived an edge that fell short of Markram at second slip before lunch. He needed treatment on his neck several times and exchanged words and smiles with Kagiso Rabada.

Jansen struck twice more before the break. Matt Renshaw steered to Harmer at third slip, and Alex Carey edged to Rickelton.

Beau Webster reviewed successfully against Mulder after being given out, but fell shortly after, caught by Markram at second slip off Jansen.

Mulder then bowled Smith, who had been troubled by his neck issue. Mitchell Starc nicked off to give Rabada his 200th Test wicket at home.

Mulder finished the innings when Pat Cummins miscued to deep square leg. He took 2-14, while Rabada claimed 2-33.
