Harry Brook hits fastest ever ODI double century

Sports Desk

England captain Harry Brook broke the record for the fastest double century in one-day international cricket, reaching 200 off 114 balls against Sri Lanka in the tri-nation series at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on October 22, as England made 429 for four.

Brook walked in at number four in the 17th over after Ben Duckett’s dismissal and attacked from the start. He moved quickly to fifty, then to a hundred, and kept accelerating towards a landmark no Englishman had reached in the format.

He reached 200 in the final over, becoming the first England batter to score an ODI double hundred. Janith Liyanage dismissed him off the last ball for 202 from 116 deliveries, an innings containing 21 fours and 10 sixes.

The previous record belonged to India’s Shubman Gill, who needed 117 balls for his unbeaten 223 against West Indies in Guwahati just under a month earlier. Gill had himself overtaken Ishan Kishan, who took 126 balls against Bangladesh in 2022.

Brook now heads the list, with Gill second and Kishan third. Glenn Maxwell’s 201 not out against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup took 128 balls, Pathum Nissanka needed 136 in 2024, and Chris Gayle’s 2015 effort completes the top six on 138.

England’s innings had solid foundations. Tom Banton made 50 off 51 balls, while Duckett contributed 29 off 39 before falling. Joe Root, at number three, added 69 off 66 before he was dismissed, setting up the platform for Brook.

Will Jacks provided the finishing touch, remaining unbeaten on 66 from only 30 deliveries as England ended their 50 overs on 429 for four. It was a formidable total for Sri Lanka to chase.

Dunith Wellalage was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers with two wickets, while Asitha Fernando and Liyanage took one each, though none could contain Brook once he got going.
