Shadman anchors Bangladesh to 213-3 before bad light strands him on 99

Staff Correspondent

Bad light halted Shadman Islam’s march towards a well-deserved century, twice, in the final session as he ended the day on 99 not out as Bangladesh reached 213-3 at stumps on Day 1of the first Test against West Indies at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Wednesday.

Shadman’s unbeaten 219-ball vigil will carry over into Day 2, where he will resume the innings alongside Litton Das, who is not out on 7.

On a pitch that offered variable bounce and considerable turn to the spinners, Shadman faced over 200 deliveries in an innings for the first time in his Test career.

Shadman had opened the innings with Tanzid Hasan Tamim, who departed for seven.

He then formed three crucial partnerships with Mominul Haque (28), Najmul Hossain Shanto (19) and Tawhid Hridoy (42) – who was stretchered off the field in the third session retired hurt – worth 59, 42 and 88 runs, respectively.

He played the second fiddle in all those stands, but quietly accumulated runs, with the help of 10 fours.

For West Indies, off-spinner Jomel Warrican claimed two wickets while pacer Jayden Seales claimed one wicket.

Earlier, after opting to bat first, Bangladesh went into Lunch on 96-2, following a testing opening burst from the West Indian pacers.

The scoring rate dipped in the second session, and the pitch started offering turn, but Bangladesh lost just one wicket of skipper Shanto thanks to Shadman and Hridoy.

The pair looked well set to punish the West Indies in the final session, before Hridoy cramped up while taking a single and had to be carried off the field eight runs short of his maiden Test half-century.

Very soon, with Shadman stranded on 96, bad light stopped play for around 45 minutes. Once the action resumed, Shadman scored three more runs, but just four overs later, the play was halted for the final time on the day.

Shadman will now have to wait till tomorrow morning to get another shot at completing his century.
