Bangladesh spinners go wicketless as West Indies cruise to eight-wicket win

Staff Correspondent

1A sloppy performance from the Bangladesh spinners and Brandon King’s unbeaten 81 helped West Indies stroll to a comfortable eight-wicket win to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka on Saturday.

West Indies eased to 170-2 in 35.1 overs, after Bangladesh were all out for 142 following another shambolic performance from the batters.

On a pitch where the Caribbean spin duo of Roston Chase and Jomel Warrican claimed 5 and 4 wickets respectively, the Bangladesh spin trio of Taijul Islam, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Nayeem Hasan remained wicketless.

The two successes came from the two pacers, with Shoriful Islam and Hasan Mahmud claiming one wicket each.

The win was set up by the 112-run opening stand between King and John Campbell. Shoriful Islam broke the stand by going through Campbell’s defences on 49.

Tegnarine Chanderpaul for one, getting caught at third-man off Hasan Mahmud.

But Kavem Hodge’s unbeaten 27-ball 31 ensured that the match ended without anymore twists.

Bangladesh spinners came close to taking inroads on a few occassions. There were a couple of close LBW shouts, but umpires' calls went against Bangladesh, as the day belonged to the visitors.

King was also dropped on 70 off Taijul, with Ebadot Hossain misjudging the flight of the ball at long-off. But by then, the fate of the match had already been sealed

Earlier on the day, Nayeem Hasan scored his maiden Test half-century which could only push the target to 170, after Bangladesh had resumed the innings on 79-6.

Bangladesh had started the Test well, finishing on 213-3 on the opening day.

Shadman Islam completed his century early on Day 2, but a batting collapse followed which bundled out Bangladesh for 272, with Jomel taking a five-wicket haul.

Nayeem took four but fifties from Chanderpaul and Campbell took the score to 245.

Bangladesh couldn't capitalise on the 27-run lead as they crumbled to 142, setting up a target which proved to be insufficient.

The next and final Test will take place in Sylhet starting on November 5.
