Lightning forced the umpires to take the players off in Mirpur on Saturday, leaving West Indies 87 without loss after 17.4 overs and 83 runs short of victory.
Bangladesh’s spinners have beaten the bat repeatedly, yet they remain without a wicket.
The umpires acted on the sound of thunder as thick cloud built overhead, even with sunshine around, and chose caution. King had just struck Nayeem for four before Campbell was beaten twice by the off-spinner, on a hard sweep and a late cut.
Play had restarted at 1:50pm once the rain eased, and the first over back produced another let-off. Taijul Islam’s lbw appeal against King was rejected, Najmul Hossain Shanto reviewed, and umpire’s call kept the opener alive for West Indies’ third such escape.
An earlier stoppage came at 64 without loss in 14.1 overs, with rain following almost immediately.
The sun soon returned, the ground staff went to work with the Super Sopper, and West Indies still needed 106 more to win the Test.
The openers brought up fifty with a bye off Taijul, and King survived an lbw shout against Nayeem on umpire’s call, making it 61 without loss after 12 overs. Campbell had enjoyed the same luck in the first over while West Indies attacked freely.
Bangladesh’s spinners lost their rhythm early. Shanto opened with spin and trusted Taijul and Miraz, yet Miraz leaked 26 in five overs and Taijul 10 in four, as West Indies reached 39 without loss after nine overs, needing 131 to win.
Miraz had the single over before lunch, and it was busy. Campbell survived an lbw review on umpire’s call, two more shouts went unreviewed, and King found a boundary to long leg, leaving West Indies eight without loss at the break.
Bangladesh added 63 in the morning and were bowled out for 142 in 48.4 overs, a lead of 169. Nayeem made 52 off 91 balls before holing out to Joshua Bishop at long on while trying to clear the boundary against Chase.
That left West Indies a target of 170 to win the Test and take the series lead. Nayeem was Chase’s fifth victim of the innings, and the morning session as a whole produced 71 runs and four wickets in 20.4 overs.
