Bangladesh find themselves on the back foot at the end of the second day of the second Test against the West Indies, reduced to 88-3 with Tawhid Hridoy and Mushfiqur Rahim trying to stage a fightback at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Friday.
Hridoy and Mushfiqur are unbeaten on 29 and 19 respectively, and added 37 runs for the fourth wicket, before bad light ended the third session prematurely for the second straight day.
The hosts still have a mountain to climb, as they trail by another 268 runs, after the West Indies were all out for 356 in the second session with pacer Hasan Mahmu claiming a six-wicket haul.
The session began with Bangladesh already 2 down for 36, having lost Tanzid Hasan Tamim (16) and makeshift opener Nayeem Hasan (five) – who opened the innings in place of Shadman Islam, who twisted his feet while fielding and has been sent to the hospital for an MRI.
Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto was accompanying Hridoy, who sought redemption after two rash dismissals in the first Test.
Shanto (18) was outdone by a seaming delivery from Shamar Joseph, which beat the bat and kissed the off-stump, bringing Mushfiqur to the middle.
Hridoy and Mushfiqur then saw out the remaining overs before poor lights ended the day’s play early.
Earlier, West Indies built on their overnight 235-4, adding 121 runs on the second day.
Day 1 centurion Amir Jangoo, departed for 133, losing his off stump to Hasan.
Pacer Taskin Ahmed also took a couple of wickets while Mehidy Hasan Miraz also struck twice, while the other two spinners, Taijul Islam and Nayeem Hasan, finished wicketless.
Bangladesh are trailing the two-Test series 1-0 after losing the Dhaka Test by eight wickets.
