West Indies’ tail wags to 356 despite Hasan’s six-fer

Sports Desk

Hasan Mahmud finished with six for 90, his second six-wicket haul in Test cricket, but a last-wicket stand of 33 lifted West Indies to 356 on the second day in Sylhet on Friday.

Nayeem Hasan then opened the batting for the first time as Bangladesh began their reply.

Bangladesh were 5 without loss after one over. Nayeem, a spin-bowling all-rounder who had never opened even in first-class cricket, faced the first ball and got off the mark with an edged boundary past the stumps. Tanzid Hasan is his opening partner.

Shadman Islam’s injury forced the change, and instead of moving each batter up one place, Bangladesh sent Nayeem out to open. Shadman is set for an MRI scan, and his availability for the rest of the match remains uncertain.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz ended the innings by trapping Jayden Seales lbw, 50 minutes after lunch. Seales stepped forward without making contact, and a review showed the ball hitting leg stump. He made 15 off 38 balls, and the stand with Jomel Warrican lasted 67 balls.

Warrican stayed unbeaten on 27 off 48 balls with four fours. Miraz took two for 82 from 31.4 overs, while Taijul Islam and Nayeem went wicketless. Taskin Ahmed also took two wickets but looked exhausted and could not find his best with the second new ball.

Hasan struck in the first over after the break, bowling Shamar Joseph for 16. The 128kph delivery pitched on a length and nipped back, and Joseph hurried across to defend too late. Middle and leg stumps went flying, leaving West Indies on 324 for nine.

The sixth wicket added to a growing list of landmarks. Hasan became the first Bangladeshi fast bowler to take a wicket through a stumping in Tests. He is also the second bowler after Nathan Lyon to collect his first five five-fors in five different countries.

His fifth five-for, taken before lunch, is the most by a Bangladeshi fast bowler, lifting him past Shahadat Hossain, who took four across 38 Tests. Hasan has reached five in 19 matches, exactly half as many.

Litton Das had moved up to the stumps for Hasan, and the move delivered the fifth wicket. Joshua Bishop missed a drive and lifted his foot, and Litton whipped off the bails. West Indies went to lunch on 322 for eight.

Earlier, Hasan bowled centurion Amir Jangoo for 133 and had Roston Chase caught behind with successive balls. Bishop survived the hat-trick delivery on review, and Miraz removed Justin Greaves for 51 with his first ball back, Bangladesh’s first spin wicket of the match.
