Bangladesh managed to take just one more wicket in the third session as West Indies ended the fourth day in command on 345-3, leading by 315 runs, in the second Test at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
Kavem Hodge led the charge for the visitors, remaining unbeaten on 140 at stumps, with debutant Kevin Wickham and Brandon King lending him support with 78 and 61, respectively.
Bangladesh managed to take just three wickets on the day, two for Taijul Islam and one for Mehidy Hasan Miraz, while off-spinner Nayeem Hasan and pacers Tasking Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud went wicketless.
The third session began with West Indies on 259-2, already leading by 229 runs.
After failing to extract any help from the pitch, Taijul started bowling on a leg-stump line, which paid dividends with Wickham hitting one ball in the air and the bowler diving to his right to complete a sharp catch.
Bangladesh thought it had struck in the very next over, when Miraz struck Hodge on the pads and the umpire ruled him LBW.
But after a review, the decision got overturned, as the ball had taken a clear inside edge.
That was the last moment of elation for the hosts as Hodge, who hit 17 fours and one six, carried on scoring runs at will, before bad light stopped play for the fourth straight day in this Test.
Hodge, alongside Amir Jangoo, who is batting on 20, are expected to resume the innings on the fifth day.
The West Indies are now well-placed to pile on a target that would be out of Bangladesh’s reach and push for a win to sweep the series 2-0.
The hosts now need a miracle on the fifth day if they are to level the two-match series 1-1.
Earlier, West Indies had begun the day on 7-0, trailing Bangladesh by 23 runs. Caribbean openers King and Joshua Da Silva (36) easily wiped out the deficit before departing late in the morning session.
Hodge and Wickham then played out the post-Lunch session, putting West Indies in the driving seat.
