BNP leader accused of assaulting engineer at his home over extortion demand

Rezaul Haque

A BNP leader has been accused of entering the home of an assistant engineer of the Education Engineering Department (EED) in Sylhet, assaulting him and demanding extortion money.

The engineer also alleged that he was threatened with expulsion from Sylhet if he refused to pay.

Md Shaheen Hossain, an assistant engineer at the EED's Sylhet office, filed a general diary (GD) with Kotwali Police Station over the incident.

The accused, Jahangir Alam, is joint secretary of Ward No. 13 of the Sylhet Metropolitan BNP and an enlisted contractor of the Education Engineering Department.

According to the engineer's complaint, the incident occurred around 3 am on October 12 at his residence in the city's Mogholtula residential area.

In his GD, Shaheen said several people arrived at his home around 3 am and began banging on the door.

When he asked them to identify themselves, one of them introduced himself as Jahangir and said he was a contractor with the Education Engineering Department.

After Shaheen opened the door, the men entered his home, pushed him around and physically assaulted him.

The GD further stated that the attackers vandalised several parts of the house and began searching the premises.

They allegedly attempted to drag Shaheen out of his home and threatened to kill him.

According to the complaint, the men warned that he would have to pay them money if he wanted to continue living in the area. Otherwise, they threatened to cause him serious harm.

Shaheen told Daily Waadaa that he met the Sylhet deputy commissioner after the incident. Acting on the deputy commissioner's advice, he filed a GD online with Kotwali Police Station.

He said he had joined the Sylhet office only about a month and a half earlier and had not yet had an opportunity to become well acquainted with people in the area.

However, he knew Jahangir Alam through his work, as Jahangir was a contractor associated with the department.

Jahangir admitted visiting the engineer's residence around 3 am but denied demanding money or assaulting him.

He claimed that local residents had become suspicious after seeing the engineer get out of a vehicle late at night and enter his home.

Because the residents did not know Shaheen, they became suspicious of his movements, Jahangir told Waadaa.

He said he subsequently went to the engineer's residence with his friend Sumon, his elder brother Iqbal and several respected elderly residents of the neighbourhood to inquire about the matter.

Jahangir maintained that the incident resulted from confusion or a misunderstanding.

He denied that any financial transaction or improper conduct was involved.

He also claimed that the misunderstanding had been resolved through discussions at the EED office the following day.

However, Md Shamsul Arefin Khan, executive engineer of the Education Engineering Department in Sylhet, disputed Jahangir's account.

He said he had heard about the incident verbally and was aware that a GD had been filed with the police.

But he denied Jahangir's claim that the matter had been settled through discussions at his office.

Meanwhile, Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mainul Zakir said the GD filed over the incident had been cancelled.

He explained that allegations of such a serious nature could not be dealt with through a general diary.

The engineer had therefore been asked to submit a formal written complaint to the police station.

The OC said he had spoken to Shaheen about the GD.

According to the police officer, Shaheen told him he would submit a written complaint after consulting officials of his department.

Sylhet Metropolitan BNP President Nasim Hossain condemned the alleged incident.

"No BNP leader can engage in such activities. Whoever has committed this act is a criminal," he said.

Nasim demanded that the accused be arrested and given the maximum punishment through due legal process.

He also said the party would take the strongest possible organisational action against the accused over the incident.
