Staff Correspondent

Two crude bombs were thrown outside the press of Bangladeshi newspaper Amar Desh in Dhaka’s Tejgaon Industrial Area late Sunday night, injuring two people, according to the newspaper and police.

One crude bomb exploded, while another unexploded device was found nearby, according to the newspaper’s report and the GD application. The injured were Akhtar Hossain, a security guard at the press, and Rina Khanam, who runs a nearby betel-leaf shop. Both received hospital treatment.

The attack took place at about 10:46pm on Sunday, 25 October, on Love Road, near the newspaper’s press. Witnesses and police sources told Amar Desh that two people arrived on a motorcycle, threw the devices and fled.

The explosion caused panic among people in the surrounding area. Police from Tejgaon Industrial Area police station and other law enforcement personnel visited the scene and searched nearby areas, but no one had been arrested, the report said.

Mohammad Shahid-ur Rahman, assistant manager (administration) at Amar Desh, confirmed the incident and said the newspaper was taking legal action.

Police are investigating the incident. Tejgaon Industrial Area police station officer-in-charge Mahbubur Rahman said a police patrol team had been sent to the scene after receiving information about the explosion.

In a general diary application filed with the police at 1:37am on Monday, the newspaper’s representative, advocate Mohammad Masum Billah, expressed concern that the attack might have been intended to intimidate the newspaper over its reporting.

The application said the motive and identities of those involved needed to be established through an investigation.
