The National Board of Revenue (NBR) on Wednesday launched its online income tax return filing service for individual taxpayers for the 2026-27 tax year, offering a 5 percent rebate on net payable tax to those who submit their returns between July and September.
The rebate will be capped at 25,000 taka. Returns filed after September will not qualify for the incentive, while those submitted after December will be subject to additional tax, the NBR said, urging taxpayers to file within the prescribed timeframe.
The revenue authority said the e-Return service is part of its efforts to make tax administration simpler, faster and more transparent.
According to the NBR, the online filing system has gained widespread acceptance since its introduction in 2021. During the 2025-26 tax year, nearly 4.7 million individual taxpayers filed their income tax returns through the e-Return platform, the highest number to date.
The NBR has also made online filing mandatory for all regular individual taxpayers through a special order.
However, paper returns will continue to be accepted from taxpayers aged 65 and above, persons with disabilities, Bangladeshi taxpayers living abroad, representatives filing on behalf of deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh.
Taxpayers who are unable to register on the e-Return system because of technical or registration-related issues may also submit paper returns with approval from the relevant Additional or Joint Commissioner of Taxes.
Through the NBR's e-Tax platform, taxpayers can pay their dues online using bank transfers, debit or credit cards, as well as mobile financial services including bKash, Rocket and Nagad. Instant acknowledgement receipts and income tax certificates will also be available upon successful submission of returns.
The NBR said assistance will be available through its call centre (09643717171) and other electronic channels during office hours on working days to help taxpayers with any issues related to online return filing.
