Ali Sethi and Shae Gill’s 2022 hit Pasoori has become the first Pakistan-made music video to cross 1 billion views on YouTube, with Coke Studio announcing the milestone on Sunday, September 7.

Coke Studio shared the news in an Instagram post, thanking “every single person who pressed play, sang along and made [‘Pasoori’] their own”.

The soulful duet was released on February 7, 2022, and reached the billion-view mark just shy of four years and seven months after its release. The milestone comes after the song became immensely popular following its debut.

Pasoori was Spotify’s most-streamed Pakistani song in the year of its release and remains the most-streamed song on the platform for both Sethi and Gill, with almost 405 million streams.

Coke Studio also shared a reel featuring Sethi and Gill alongside music producers Zulfiqar Khan, known as Xulfi, and Abdullah Siddiqui, thanking fans for helping the song reach the milestone.

The song became a global sensation soon after its release, inspiring covers in Pakistan, India and beyond the subcontinent. It also featured on the soundtrack of Disney’s Ms Marvel, a series that drew heavily from Pakistani culture through its Pakistani-American protagonist.

Coke Studio Africa later released a remix of Pasoori, with Sethi collaborating with Marwan Moussa and Reekado Banks on a version infused with Nigerian Afrobeats.

The song also received a Bollywood version sung by Arijit Singh, a move that drew significant criticism and anger from fans.
