Welsh actor Matthew Rhys made Emmy history at Monday’s 78th Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, becoming the first person to win two lead acting Emmys in a single ceremony and the first male performer to claim all three top acting prizes.

Rhys first won the lead actor award in a limited or anthology series or movie for his performance in Netflix’s The Beast in Me. Later in the evening, he won the lead actor in a comedy series prize for Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay.

The two victories made Rhys the first person to win both lead actor prizes at the same ceremony. Along with his 2018 Emmy for lead actor in a drama series for The Americans, the wins gave him the complete set of lead acting Emmys across drama, comedy and limited series.

Two performers had previously won two acting Emmys on the same night, but neither had done so in lead categories. James Earl Jones won lead drama actor for Gabriel’s Fire and supporting actor in a limited series for Heat Wave in 1991, while Stockard Channing won two supporting actress awards in 2002 for The West Wing and The Matthew Shepard Story.

Rhys is the first performer to win in the lead categories twice on the same night.

He also became the first man to complete the three-category acting sweep. Robert Young and Carroll O’Connor each won lead acting awards in drama and comedy, while Andre Braugher won in drama and limited series.

The only performer of any gender to have previously completed the set was Barbara Stanwyck, who won all three lead actress categories between 1961 and 1983. Her earliest win came before the comedy and drama races were split.

In the limited series race, Rhys defeated Oscar Isaac for Beef, Riz Ahmed for Bait, Jason Bateman for Black Rabbit and Charlie Hunnam for Monster: The Ed Gein Story.

In the comedy category, he prevailed over Yahya Abdul-Mateen II for Wonder Man, Steve Carell for Rooster, Jason Segel for Shrinking and Martin Short for Only Murders in the Building.

Rhys also received two additional nominations as an executive producer on both Widow’s Bay and The Beast in Me.

Widow’s Bay won comedy series, setting an all-time record for a comedy with 14 trophies.

This year’s Emmy nominations were led by The Pitt with 25 nominations, followed by Hacks, Widow’s Bay and Beef.
