Emmy-winning actor Hannah Einbinder has called on the US government to “bring an end” to Israel’s attacks on Gaza after being detained at a demonstration outside the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Thursday.

The Hacks star was among protesters detained while demonstrating against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s arrival at the UN building.

Following the arrest, Einbinder said she did not want the message of the demonstration to be lost in coverage of the arrests.

“If the pictures of my friends and me getting arrested in protest of Netanyahu’s shameful visit to New York draw attention to anything, let it be to the devastating genocidal war Israel is waging against the people of Palestine and Southern Lebanon,” she wrote in a statement shared on her Instagram Story.

She also referred to settler attacks, home demolitions and bombings, saying such incidents happen every day but receive little international press coverage.

“The US government has the power to bring an end to all of this killing, pillaging, and land theft, yet instead it chooses to welcome the butcher of Gaza with open arms,” Einbinder wrote.

She also criticised both major US political parties, saying they “enable and protect architects of genocide like Netanyahu”.

“Let us not mistake the spectacle for the story: genocide is the headline, and it is time for it to end,” she added.

Einbinder and actor Susan Sarandon were among as many as 100 anti-war protesters detained while blocking Netanyahu’s entrance to the UN, where he addressed global leaders at the UNGA.

Other figures present at the demonstration included Cynthia Nixon, Elliot Page, Chelsea Manning, Glennon Doyle, Sarah Sherman, Mary Beth Barone, Indya Moore and Caleb Hearon.

Protesters chanted “Free, free Palestine! Stop the genocide!” and “Netanyahu, you can’t hide! We charge you with genocide!”

The demonstration was organised by Jewish Voice for Peace.
