An animated television adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s bestselling Artemis Fowl book series has been greenlit for Disney Channel and Disney+, the author announced during the “25 Years of Artemis Fowl” panel at New York Comic Con.

Colfer will serve as an executive producer on the series, which follows Artemis Fowl, a 13-year-old genius who discovers an underground world of armed, technologically advanced fairies. He sets out to capture one of them and steal its magic in an attempt to save his dying mother and protect his family.

The first Artemis Fowl book was published in 2001. Colfer subsequently wrote 10 more novels in the series, the latest of which was released in 2021. The franchise has sold more than 35 million copies worldwide and been translated into 48 languages.

The animated adaptation is not the first time the young protagonist has appeared on screen. A live-action film based on the first book debuted on Disney+ in 2020 but received negative reviews. The film was removed from the streaming platform in 2023.

“For more than two decades, Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl books have captivated readers around the world with unforgettable characters, imaginative world-building, and gripping adventures,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family.

“Bringing this beloved franchise to life as an animated series gives us the opportunity to introduce a new generation to Artemis’ world while honoring the longtime fans who have cherished these stories for years,” Davis added.

Colfer said he was pleased to be part of the team adapting the books for animation.

“I am proud and delighted to be part of the formidable team that is putting the Artemis Fowl animation on screen. Everyone is so talented and so positive that I feel certain the fairy world is in excellent hands,” he said.

The series will also be executive produced by Ben Juwono and Colleen Evanson.
