Prime Video has unveiled the official trailer for The Greatest, an eight-part biographical drama about boxing legend Muhammad Ali, with all episodes set to premiere on the streaming platform on 4 November 2026.
The series stars Jaalen Best as Cassius Clay, the young boxer who would become one of the most influential sporting figures in history. It is the first authorised scripted television series about Ali’s life and will explore his journey beyond the boxing ring, including his family relationships, personal struggles and political convictions.
Produced by Amazon MGM Studios, the series brings together Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society, Roc Nation and other production companies. Ali’s widow, Lonnie Ali, serves as an executive producer.
The newly released trailer introduces audiences to Clay growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, before his rise to international fame. Rather than concentrating solely on his achievements in boxing, the series examines the personal, professional and political challenges that shaped his life.
Set against the backdrop of a changing America, The Greatest follows Clay as he develops as a fighter, navigates the expectations of those around him and establishes his identity. The series also explores the relationships with family members, trainers, rivals and mentors that influenced his development.
Best takes on the role of the young Clay, portraying the early stages of his transformation into a heavyweight champion known for his confidence, charisma and outspoken beliefs.
The cast includes Omari Hardwick as Ali’s father, Cassius Clay Sr., and Dana Gourrier as his mother, Odessa ‘Bird’ Clay. Kai Parham plays his younger brother, Rudy Clay, who later became known as Rahman Ali.
Amin Joseph portrays heavyweight champion Sonny Liston, while Giovanni Ribisi plays Angelo Dundee, the boxing trainer who played a significant role in Ali’s professional career. Michael Ealy appears as Malcolm X, the civil rights and religious leader whose relationship with Ali influenced an important period in the boxer’s personal and political development.
The ensemble brings together figures from Ali’s family life, sporting career and wider cultural world to examine the people who helped shape his journey.
Born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. in Louisville in 1942, Ali developed an interest in boxing during childhood. He won an Olympic gold medal at the 1960 Rome Games before becoming a professional boxer and a three-time world heavyweight champion.
His 1964 victory over Liston became a defining moment in heavyweight boxing. However, Ali’s legacy extended well beyond his sporting achievements.
His conversion to Islam, decision to change his name and refusal to be inducted into the US armed forces during the Vietnam War drew widespread attention and carried significant professional consequences. He lost his heavyweight title and was suspended from boxing during some of his prime competitive years.
Ali remained committed to his beliefs and became a prominent symbol of conviction, resilience and self-determination. He died in June 2016 at the age of 74.
The series aims to examine how his sporting success, personal principles and public life combined to shape his enduring influence on sport and popular culture.
The drama was created by Ben Watkins, who also serves as showrunner and executive producer through his company, Blue Monday Productions. Watkins is known for his work on television dramas including Cross.
Jordan’s Outlier Society is among the production companies behind the series, with the company’s president, Elizabeth Raposo, also serving as an executive producer. Other executive producers represent Authentic Brands Group, Roc Nation, Polygram Entertainment and Grace: A Storytelling Company.
The production team also includes Corey Salter, Matthew Gross, Marc Rosen, Craig Siebels, Aiyana White, Jeff Augustin, Katie Wech, Owen Shiflett, Boyd Muir, Michele Anthony, Josh Wakely and Desiree Perez. David Blackman and Stefano Agosto serve as co-executive producers.
Lonnie Ali’s involvement as an executive producer distinguishes the series as an authorised account of the late boxer’s life.
The Greatest will premiere worldwide on Prime Video on 4 November 2026, with all eight episodes available at launch. The series will be available exclusively on the platform in more than 240 countries and territories.
Its extended format offers scope to explore Ali’s relationships, convictions and defining experiences in greater detail, presenting a portrait of the man behind one of sport’s most recognisable names.
