Actors Equity Bangladesh has taken responsibility for actor Somu Chowdhury’s medical treatment after receiving consent from his family, with the organisation confirming on October 29 that the treatment process had begun and that it would cover all associated expenses.
The development was confirmed by the organisation’s general secretary, Rashed Mamun Apu, who said members had contacted the actor’s family after concerns about his health grew following the circulation of several videos on social media.
“We were prepared to take responsibility for Somu Chowdhury’s treatment and had been waiting for his family’s permission. Today, we received consent from his mother and other family members, and the treatment process has already begun,” Apu said.
He added that the treatment would be carried out under the organisation’s supervision, with all expenses covered by Actors Equity Bangladesh.
This is not the first time the organisation has stepped in to help the actor. Around two years ago, members arranged to move Chowdhury to a safe place after he was found in a disoriented condition at a shrine in Gafargaon. They also attempted to arrange medical treatment at the time, but the process could not proceed because his family did not give consent.
More recently, videos shared on social media showed the actor at various locations, including a marketplace, a shrine and a musical gathering, prompting renewed concern among colleagues and admirers.
Several people have urged the public to focus on Chowdhury’s treatment and recovery rather than circulating footage of him online. They have also stressed the importance of respecting his dignity during this difficult period.
