Portugal finished as Group K runners-up after a 0-0 draw against Colombia in their final group stage match, finishing second behind the South American side.
Portugal will now have to face a stern challenge first up in the knockouts, as they will face former World Cup runners-up Croatia in Round of 32 on July 3.
The European giants entered the game needing a positive result to confirm their progression, while Colombia were aiming to protect their position at the top of the group.
Colombia started the brighter of the two teams and immediately put Portugal under pressure. Jhon Cordoba came close inside the opening minute, heading Luis Diaz’s cross narrowly over the bar.
Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa was forced into action early as Colombia continued to attack. He produced a superb save to deny Cordoba after a dangerous run from Jhon Arias.
The Portuguese side gradually settled into the match and began finding space in midfield. Bruno Fernandes became their main creative outlet, testing Colombia goalkeeper Camilo Vargas with several dangerous efforts.
Joao Felix also had an opportunity before halftime when he found room inside the penalty area, but his volley sailed over the crossbar as Portugal struggled to turn possession into a breakthrough.
Cristiano Ronaldo started for Portugal but endured a quiet night against Colombia’s organised defence. The captain found little room to operate and could not create a decisive moment for his side.
After the interval, Portugal showed more attacking intent and pushed higher up the pitch. The introduction of Rafael Leao and Samu Costa added fresh energy as they searched for a winning goal.
Fernandes continued to drive Portugal forward, combining with the forwards and attempting to unlock the Colombian defence. However, Colombia remained compact and dangerous on the counterattack.
Portugal’s defence also had to remain alert as Colombia kept creating opportunities. Davinson Sanchez came close to becoming the match-winner late in the game when his header found the net in stoppage time.
However, the goal was ruled out after a VAR review confirmed an offside decision, keeping the score level.
Portugal pushed for a late winner but could not find a way past Vargas. Leao had one final chance, but his effort went wide as both teams settled for a point.
In the other Group K match, Congo beat Uzbekistan 3-1 and qualified for the knockouts as one of the eight best third-place finishers.
