Morocco break Dutch hearts in penalty shootout thriller

Morocco knocked the Netherlands out of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after a dramatic penalty shootout victory in a thrilling Round of 32 encounter on Tuesday.

The match finished 1-1 after 120 minutes, before Morocco held their nerve to win the shootout 3-2 and book their place in the Round of 16.

The North Africans were the better side for long periods and showed greater attacking intent, repeatedly testing the Dutch defence throughout the contest.

Morocco started brightly, with Achraf Hakimi and their attacking players creating early danger. Bart Verbruggen was forced into action, making important saves to keep the Netherlands level.

The first half remained goalless despite Morocco having the sharper chances. The Netherlands struggled to create clear opportunities, while Morocco looked more threatening on the break.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with both teams fighting for control. Morocco continued to pressure the Dutch goal, earning several corners and pushing forward in search of a breakthrough.

However, the Netherlands finally found the breakthrough in the 72nd minute. Cody Gakpo finished from close range after Crysencio Summerville created the chance, putting the Dutch ahead.

The goal forced Morocco to increase their attacking efforts, and the Atlas Lions pushed forward with greater urgency. The Dutch dropped deeper, trying to protect their narrow advantage.

Just when it looked like the Netherlands would survive, Morocco produced a dramatic late equaliser. Issa Diop headed in during stoppage time after a cross from Chemsdine Talbi, sending the match into extra time.

Extra time belonged mostly to Morocco, who controlled possession and looked the more dangerous team. The Netherlands struggled to threaten as the tension built towards penalties.

Morocco’s patience was rewarded in the shootout. Soufiane Rahimi, Chemsdine Talbi and Ismael Saibari converted their penalties, while Yassine Bounou made a crucial save to deny Crysencio Summerville.

The Netherlands missed their chance when Quinten Timber failed to convert, allowing Morocco to seal a memorable 3-2 shootout win.

Saibari scored the decisive penalty and sparked wild celebrations among Moroccan supporters, while the Dutch were left heartbroken after another dramatic World Cup exit.

Morocco will now move into the Round of 16 where they will face one of the hosts in Canada.
