It was a disappointing way to go out, says Pulisic

The end of the American dream came in clinical fashion. Mauricio Pochettino's men went into their Round-of-16 tie with Belgium full of optimism, but were knocked out of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after being thoroughly outplayed by the Red Devils.

After the Stars and Stripes' 4-1 defeat to Belgium in Seattle, the mood among the squad was one of complete dejection.

"Up until today, we are very proud and I thought we did a lot of good things, but for sure [it was] just a disappointing way to end," playmaker Christian Pulisic told FIFA. "We played against a very good team [that was] very clinical in both ends of the pitch, and we weren't exactly so... that's where the game is won in the boxes, so it was not quite enough from us today."

"I don't have a lot of words, we're really disappointed. It just wasn't our day," added full-back Sergino Dest. "We are proud but we felt that we could have done more than what we did, so at the moment we're just disappointed."

The warning signs were there when Charles De Ketelaere opened the scoring with a simple tap-in, after clever work down the left from Leandro Trossard. The USA were then somewhat fortunate to level the scores after Malik Tillman's free-kick took a deflection past Thibaut Courtois.

But that was as good as it got for Mauricio Pochettino's team as De Ketelaere resorted the lead barely a minute later. An error from USA goalkeeper Matt Freese helped extend the lead to 3-1, with substitute Romelu Lukaku putting the exclamation point on the victory in injury time.

Despite the manner of their exit, the USA squad believe they have sown seeds of optimism and progress for the future after reaching the Round of 16.

"Hopefully this is just the [beginning] of what's to come for this group and this federation," said defender Chris Richards. "I think it should be the normal, at least the quarter-finals. Hopefully we've drawn a line in the sand for the future."

"We did the best that we can. I hope that people can see that and believed in us and there's more than what we wanted to accomplish," Pulisic noted.

Saying goodbye to the World Cup was also sweet sorrow for playmaker Gio Reyna, who was a half-time substitute.

"It was one of those days where things did not fall our way. It wasn't our best game, I felt we could have managed a couple of moments a bit better. They were the better team today," he said. "We all really enjoyed our time together. It's been one of my favourite experiences as a player so far in my career."
