Belgium's official team account taunted the United States on social media following the Red Devils' 4-1 win over the Americans in the World Cup Round of 16 on Tuesday.
The post referenced the overturning of a suspension for US forward Folarin Balogun, who had been sent off in the Americans' win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the previous round.
Balogun was cleared to start against Belgium after FIFA's Disciplinary Committee suspended his punishment.
But Balogun’s presence had little impact on the match, as the Belgians romped to a comfortable win.
Afterwards, their official Instagram handle posted an image of Romelu Lukaku celebrating Belgium's fourth goal of the match with a caption “Overturn this”.
In a separate post, the account also mocked the American use of the word "soccer", posting “It’s called FOOTBALL” with “soccer” crossed out.
Belgium will face Spain in the World Cup quarterfinals on Friday in Los Angeles.
Earlier, Balogun was dismissed during the United States' 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the second round. Under FIFA's Disciplinary Code, he should have faced an automatic one-match ban.
But after US President Donald Trump reportedly called FIFA President Gianni Infantino over the matter, the FIFA's Disciplinary Committee suspended the punishment, allowing Balogun to play against Belgium.
Infantino said he does not interfere in disciplinary rulings and that FIFA's judicial bodies operate independently. Trump denied pressuring FIFA but acknowledged asking for the incident to be reviewed.
“All I did was ask for a review. I didn’t say, you have to do this,” Trump said at a White House media briefing Monday.
The Belgian Football Federation appealed the decision to FIFA's Appeals Committee but their plea was rejected on Monday.
In the pre-match press conference Belgium coach Rudi Garcia sharply reacted to the situation with a sarcastic comment that quickly went viral.
“I didn't know that at the FIFA World Cup, the fifth of July is now the first of April and it's April Fool's Day.”
But after all the controversy, the US put up a meek performance against the European side and became the last of the three co-hosts to get eliminated.
Earlier, Canada and Mexico also crashed out of the tournament from the Round of 16, with the Canadians losing 3-0 to Morocco and the Mexicans suffering a 3-2 defeat at the Azteca.
