European football leaders have been trying to persuade Paris Saint Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi to challenge Gianni Infantino for the FIFA president position, however, the Qatari businessman remains uninterested, according to multiple reports.

Khelaifi, who is also the chairman of Qatar Sports Investments, is viewed by his supporters in UEFA as having the best chance of unseating Infantino at next year's presidential election and to put a stop to plans of selling off World Cup stakes.

Khelaifi has long been one of the most powerful figures in the world of football. He sits on UEFA’s executive committee, chairs beIN Media Group, which holds broadcast rights to the World Cup and Champions League, and also chairs European Football Clubs.

Politico was first to report that UEFA sees Khelaifi as a possible candidate to oppose Infantino in the polls and since then many others have reported the same.

However, according to The Telegraph, Khelaifi himself is uninterested in contesting, quoting a representative of the PSG president, who said that he “has absolutely no ambition, no intention, no interest in the FIFA role”.

UEFA, meanwhile, has declared a boycott of the World Cup and all other FIFA events until this proposal stands.

The decision was taken following an emergency meeting with member associations on Thursday.

Earlier on Wednesday, the European football association had strongly condemned the plan after it came to light.
