Spain move to extend De la Fuente's contract through 2030 after World Cup win

Spanish football's governing body has opened talks over a new deal for Luis de la Fuente, aiming to stretch his tenure well beyond his current contract and keep him in charge through the 2030 World Cup, which Spain will co-host with Portugal and Morocco.

The 65-year-old is presently contracted until 2028, having agreed fresh terms shortly after a change in federation leadership earlier in his tenure. That deal now looks set to be extended again, this time in recognition of guiding Spain to their second World Cup title this year.

RFEF president Rafael Louzan confirmed the negotiations were already under way in an interview with Radio Nacional de Espana.

"I think it is something Luis deserves and we are working on it. We are going to work on it now, and in fact we are already doing so, to extend his contract, which currently runs until 2028, so that we can take it beyond or around 2030 because he has to be part of it."

Louzan pointed to De la Fuente's demeanour and track record across every level of the national team setup as central to the federation's case for keeping him on.

"His simplicity and his ability to work have led us to achieve this success, together with an unforgettable group of players with this Spanish national team."

The federation president also highlighted De la Fuente's collection of titles across various Spanish youth and senior sides as further justification for extending his stay, framing the World Cup win as the latest chapter in a broader body of work rather than an isolated achievement.

Beyond the coaching decision, Louzan used the same interview to press Spain's case to host the 2030 World Cup final, arguing the country's current standing in the sport, having won both the men's and women's world titles, makes such an outcome close to inevitable.

"It would be difficult to understand any outcome other than Spain hosting the final of that great World Cup."

Securing De la Fuente's long-term future is seen as central to providing stability as Spain begin the defence of their crown and continue introducing younger players into the squad.

That transition faces an early test next month in the UEFA Nations League, with fixtures against England and Croatia already on the calendar.
