Bayern Munich start season with Super Cup win over Dortmund

Bayern Munich began their season with silverware, beating rivals Borussia Dortmund 2-1 at Signal Iduna Park on Saturday to lift the Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup for a 12th time in their history.

Michael Olise was the architect of the win, setting up Nathaniel Brown's opener before adding a goal of his own. The France forward finished the night with a goal and an assist, and was named player of the match.

Brown broke the deadlock in the 28th minute on his competitive debut for the club, sweeping in Olise's cross from the edge of the box to score his first goal since his summer move from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Olise doubled the lead in first half stoppage time, pouncing after Jobe Bellingham lost possession in midfield before poking the ball past Gregor Kobel from close range. Bayern led 2-0 at the interval, having dominated with 64 per cent of the possession.

Dortmund improved after half time, with Giannis Konstantelias and Konstantinos Karetsas both testing the Bayern defence, though Manuel Neuer was rarely troubled. Fabio Silva then pulled one back in the 75th minute, sweeping home after a swift move down the left.

Ramy Bensebaini thought he had levelled matters moments later, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside after a VAR review. The Algerian defender was later shown a straight red card in stoppage time for a late challenge on substitute Ismael Saibari.

Dortmund pushed for a leveller with ten men, but Maximilian Beier spurned a golden chance late on, side footing over from close range. Bayern held firm to seal the win and open their campaign with a trophy.

Vincent Kompany's side, chasing a third straight Bundesliga title, begin their league defence at home to VfB Stuttgart on Friday. Dortmund, tipped by many to finish as runners up again, host Hamburg the following weekend.
