Bruno Fernandes delivered a captain's performance to inspire Manchester United to a 5-2 comeback victory over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on Sunday, scoring a hat-trick to join an elite list of players with multiple Premier League hat-tricks for the club.
Ipswich, one of two newly promoted sides this season, stunned the hosts by taking the lead through Leif Davis in the 29th minute, but Fernandes levelled 11 minutes later, receiving a pass from Matheus Cunha before beating the goalkeeper with his left foot.
He then converted from the penalty spot after the hour mark, sending keeper Kjell Scherpen the wrong way despite the mind games, before completing his hat-trick with a tidy finish seven minutes later.
Fernandes then added a late assist, threading a sublime pass to Bryan Mbeumo for United's fifth.
It was Fernandes' second Premier League hat-trick for the club, the first also coming in United's opening home game of a season, against Leeds United in 2021-22.
He became only the tenth player to score multiple league hat-tricks for United, joining legends including Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, and only the second midfielder to achieve the feat after Paul Scholes.
Harry Maguire added a fourth in controversial circumstances, with the ball appearing to strike his arm before he fired towards goal, only for the effort to deflect into the net off Jacob Greaves.
VAR allowed the goal to stand, ruling that the handball did not directly lead to the score as Maguire had taken two further touches before shooting and the final deflection came off an Ipswich defender.
Marcus Rashford made his first Premier League start for the club since December 2024, drawing a roar from Old Trafford with his energy and intent.
His crossing was a particular highlight, with one precise first-time ball across the face of goal somehow met by Mbeumo's knee and diverted onto the bar from two yards out.
Rashford also went close with a first-time volley that Scherpen pushed away brilliantly.
Mbeumo partially atoned for his miss with a composed late finish to complete the scoring. Chuba Akpom grabbed a second for Ipswich in consolation.
Concerns remain for manager Michael Carrick, however, with Luke Shaw too easily beaten for Ipswich's opening goal and three goals now conceded in two matches against newly promoted opposition.
United visit Everton on 6 September in their next Premier League fixture.
