Bangladesh's Under 20 side began their AFC U-20 Asian Cup qualifying campaign with a 2-0 defeat to hosts Uzbekistan at Dostlik Stadium in Tashkent on Monday.
Goalkeeper Raj Chowdhury stood firm for long stretches, denying Uzbekistan on several occasions before the hosts finally broke through, with the defeat marking Bangladesh's fifth straight loss to Uzbekistan across youth and senior football, having never beaten them at any level.
Uzbekistan pressed from the outset, with captain Azizbek Tulkinbekov firing over from distance inside the opening 12 minutes.
Raj then produced back to back saves shortly after, diving to deny Kuvanishbek Saydaliyev before repelling a close range effort from Abrayev Kuvonchbek.
The deadlock finally broke in the 20th minute. Asilbek cut into the box from the left and struck a powerful shot that was blocked by Abdul Riyadh Fahim's chest, only for the loose ball to fall to Saydaliyev, whose effort deflected off Raisul Islam Rahid and into the net.
Bangladesh coach Gerard Jones responded with an early double substitution, bringing on England based Adam Abbas and Australia based Ehsan Malik, though the changes did little to alter the pattern of the match as Uzbekistan continued to dominate possession and territory.
Statistics reflected the one sided nature of the opening half, with Uzbekistan enjoying close to 80 percent of possession and firing 15 shots at goal, ten of them off target, while Bangladesh failed to register a single shot on target of their own.
Uzbekistan doubled their advantage almost immediately after the restart, with Kuvonchbek rising to head home a precise cross from Saydaliyev in the very first minute of the second half, effectively ending any lingering hopes of a Bangladesh comeback.
The hosts eased off somewhat thereafter, with Dilshodbekov firing over from long range in the 75th minute as their only notable second half chance.
Bangladesh, meanwhile, came closest to a consolation through substitute Apu Rahman in the 83rd minute, who worked his way into a one on one opportunity before losing his footing and failing to get a shot away as the goalkeeper cleared the danger.
Bangladesh will look to bounce back when they face Syria in their second Group B qualifier on Thursday, at the same Tashkent venue.
Syria themselves opened their campaign with a narrow 1-0 defeat to India, conceding late in that fixture.
The wider qualifying tournament features 44 teams split across two tiers, with 32 sides, including Bangladesh, competing for places in the main event.
The eight group winners and seven best runners up will advance to the final tournament in China next March, where the hosts will join them automatically.
