Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio has been convicted of drink driving following an incident in Gran Canaria in August, a court source confirmed on Wednesday, adding to a mounting list of legal problems facing the 23 year old centre back.

The conviction stemmed from a trial held in San Bartolome de Tirajana, a village in Gran Canaria, over an incident on August 16, when Asencio was found to be more than three times over the legal alcohol limit while driving.

He was fined 14,400 euros as a result and had his driving licence suspended for eight months, a penalty handed down after prosecutors established the severity of the breach during proceedings.

Asencio, who hails from the Canary Islands, was not involved with Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid squad at the time of the incident, having remained sidelined while recovering from a hamstring injury sustained at the end of July.

The defender now faces a separate and more serious court case in Gran Canaria this week, concerning the alleged non consensual sharing of a sexual video dating back to 2023, with the trial scheduled to run across September 3, 4 and 7.

Spanish media reports suggest Asencio anticipates being cleared in that case, provided the two women filmed in the footage formally offer their forgiveness as part of the proceedings.

Three former Real Madrid reserve team players are also standing trial in connection with the same case, accused of having recorded and distributed the video without consent at the time.
