Erling Haaland struck twice to fire Norway to a 3-2 victory over Denmark in their opening UEFA Nations League fixture on Thursday, securing a historic first competitive win over their Scandinavian rivals in nearly three decades.
Stale Solbakken's side made a bright start in Oslo, though Denmark had the first genuine sight of goal when Patrick Dorgu cut inside before forcing a save from goalkeeper Orjan Nyland early in the contest.
Norway took the lead in the 14th minute when Oscar Bobb, timing his run to stay onside from Martin Odegaard's pass, curled a finish beyond the diving Filip Jorgensen and inside the far post.
The hosts doubled their advantage just four minutes later, with Haaland collecting a long pass from Nyland before latching onto a through ball from Antonio Nusa and squeezing a low finish through Jorgensen's legs.
Denmark responded before the half hour mark, as Mikkel Damsgaard curled home a superb free kick that left Nyland with no chance, breathing fresh life into the contest heading towards the interval.
Norway continued to threaten before the break, with Odegaard splitting Denmark's defence to tee up Patrick Berg, only for Jorgensen to react well and deny the midfielder from close range inside the box.
Nyland was equally alert at the other end, tipping over a dangerous strike from Joakim Maehle to preserve Norway's slender advantage heading into the second half of the contest.
Denmark grew increasingly confident after the restart, applying sustained pressure as Rasmus Hojlund saw an early effort blocked before Rasmus Kristensen forced his way onto a loose touch, though his eventual shot lacked conviction.
That pressure finally told on the hour mark, when Nyland saved an initial header from Morten Hjulmand at a corner, only for Hojlund to react quickest and bundle home the rebound to level the scores at 2-2.
Hojlund almost turned the game entirely in Denmark's favour soon afterwards, seeing a fierce effort awkwardly tipped onto the post before Thelo Aasgaard also had a chance blocked at the opposite end for Norway.
Haaland eventually settled matters in the 74th minute, converting a well worked short corner routine after Odegaard's delivery found him at the near post, allowing the striker to turn home a clinical finish.
Denmark's afternoon worsened further in stoppage time, with David Wolfe shown a second yellow card for bundling over Gustav Isaksen, reducing the visitors to ten men in the closing stages of the match.
The result extended Norway's unbeaten run at home in Oslo to fourteen matches, a streak stretching back to March 2024, while Denmark remain winless in their last six away fixtures in the competition.
Haaland's brace also carried significant individual weight, taking his overall international tally to 64 goals from just 56 appearances, surpassing the career totals of both Ronaldo Nazario and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the process.
Both forwards had previously finished their respective international careers on 62 goals, meaning Haaland now sits ahead of two of the most prolific strikers in the sport's recent history at international level.
Haaland now also boasts 21 goals in just 17 Nations League appearances, a return that makes him the all time leading scorer in the competition's relatively short history since its introduction back in 2018.
His form arrives on the back of a productive World Cup campaign, during which he scored seven goals to help fire Norway through to the quarter final stage of the tournament earlier this year.
The victory also lifts Norway to the top of Group A4 on goal difference, level on points with Portugal, who secured their own opening win over Wales on the same night.
Norway will next face Portugal on Sunday in what promises to be a decisive fixture for top spot in the group, before turning their attention to Wales on 1 October in their following assignment.
