Pakistan came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with the Philippines at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium on Tuesday, a remarkable fightback given the more than 60 place gap between the sides in the FIFA rankings, earning their first ever point in a FIFA competition.
Ranked 198th in the world and appearing at a FIFA event for the first time, Nolberto Solano's side had been thrashed 4-0 by Thailand in their opener, while the Philippines, ranked 135th, had also lost their first match, going down 1-0 to Vietnam.
The Philippines took control early, with Sandro Reyes bundling home a rebound in the 24th minute after Mohibullah Afridi could only turn a header onto the bar, before a Mohammad Fazal handball gifted the hosts a penalty seven minutes later.
Bjorn Kristensen sent goalkeeper Yousuf Butt the wrong way from the spot to make it 2-0, capping a difficult first half in which Pakistan's defence had already been tested repeatedly, with Butt earlier denying Andre Leipold in a one on one chance.
Solano made two changes at the break, bringing on Ali Agha and Hayyan Khattak, and the switch paid off almost immediately when skipper Abdullah Iqbal found Ali Akbar Khan, who weaved past a defender to score his maiden international goal within two minutes of the restart.
Pakistan continued to press and found their equaliser soon after the hour mark, Abdul Samad Arshad winning the ball on the right, driving into the box and cutting onto his left foot to fire past Kevin Ray Mendoza for his second international goal.
Solano later handed senior debuts to Abdul Rehman and Abdul Samad Khan as Pakistan pushed for a winner, with Mohibullah producing another crucial block at the other end to preserve the point his side had fought hard to earn.
The draw leaves both sides' hopes finely balanced in Group B, with Pakistan fourth on one point and the Philippines above them on goal difference, setting up a must win finale for Pakistan against Vietnam next Friday.
Vietnam currently sit second on three points, level with Thailand on goal difference, meaning Pakistan will need a positive result in their final group match to have any chance of progressing from the group stage.
