India produced a spirited opening before Brazil’s superior quality proved decisive in a 4-0 friendly defeat in the David versus Goliath meeting at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday.
Estevao opened the scoring in the 28th minute with a powerful strike, before Pedro doubled Brazil’s lead in the 42nd minute. Samuel Lino added a third in the 58th minute after capitalising on a defensive error, while Lino completed the scoring with another superb effort in stoppage time to seal a comprehensive victory.
Coach Khalid Jamil’s side remained competitive for the first 27 minutes, troubling the five-time world champions with disciplined defending and occasional counter-attacks, but struggled to sustain that intensity as the visitors took control.
India began with confidence, holding their shape against a Brazilian side featuring Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior. The hosts also showed ambition going forward, with Manvir Singh threatening on the counter and the midfield working hard to disrupt Brazil’s rhythm.
Manvir had an opportunity after chasing a long ball, only for Brazil captain Marquinhos to recover and intervene. Williams also created moments of promise, while India’s defenders made important interceptions to limit Brazil’s early opportunities.
However, Estevao’s breakthrough shifted the momentum, and Pedro’s goal shortly before half-time left India facing a difficult task.
Brazil increased the pressure after the break, but India continued to search for openings rather than retreat entirely into their own half.
Manvir tested goalkeeper Pedro Morisco from a narrow angle, while Williams came close to reducing the deficit when his effort was cleared off the line. The hosts also worked hard to create opportunities through quick transitions.
India’s attacking intent, however, came with risks at the back. Bijoy Varghese’s misplaced pass allowed Brazil to launch the move that led to Lino’s first goal, and the forward punished the defence again with a late strike.
India goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Gill made several interventions, while the hosts blocked further attempts as Brazil sought to extend their advantage.
Despite the scoreline, India showed periods of composure and determination against elite opposition. Brazil’s finishing and ability to exploit defensive mistakes ultimately separated the sides, leaving India with lessons to take from a demanding encounter.
