Federation Cup begins with convincing wins for Kings and Mohammedan

Sports Desk

Five time champions Bashundhara Kings opened their Federation Cup defence in style, thrashing Dhaka Wanderers 5-0 in Munshiganj on Tuesday, while last season's runners-up Mohammedan came from behind to beat Arambagh 3-1 in Gopalganj on the same day.

Bashundhara dominated possession throughout at the Shaheed Bir Sreshtho Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium, finishing with nearly 70 per cent of the ball and converting five of their seven shots on target, though the breakthrough did not arrive until after half time.

Robson Robinho broke the deadlock just two minutes into the second half, converting from the penalty spot for the champions, before Alamgir Molla doubled the lead only two minutes later to put the result firmly beyond doubt.

Bashundhara Kings sealed a 5-0 win with five second-half goals.

Mohammad Abdullah added a third in the 62nd minute, before substitute Sabbir Hossain completed the rout with two late goals in the 85th and 90th minutes, rounding off a dominant attacking display from the reigning Federation Cup holders.

In Gopalganj, Mohammedan found themselves behind early on, Ghanaian midfielder Rayies Suraj giving Arambagh a 16th minute lead that held until the interval, leaving the 11 time champions with plenty to do after the break.

Sourav Dewan levelled for Mohammedan in the 57th minute, before Mohammad Sohel Rana put them ahead for the first time in the 74th, and Malian forward Souleymane Diabate added a third to confirm the comeback win.

The victory continued a strong start to the season for Mohammedan under Argentine born Spanish coach Fernando Varela, who has now guided the club to winning starts in both the league and the Federation Cup within days of each other.

Elsewhere in Group B, Police and City Club shared the points in a 1-1 draw at Manikganj, with Rasul Ba giving Police the lead in the 60th minute before Okafor equalised for City Club deep into stoppage time.
